Driving home to West Yellowstone, Montana (a town with a population of about 1200) on the night of April 11, a 51-year-old woman piloted her 2007 Ford Fusion into a herd of American buffalo – and lived to tell her story to Ford PR.
Maureen Edgerton was driving home on a snowbound highway when she slammed into a herd of bison – which just so happened to be following a migration path that led them over the highway – at 55 mph. Not only did Edgerton come out of the wreck alive, she walked away from the scene with only minor scrapes and bruises.
The bison were not so lucky. In the process of interrupting the bison migration, Edgerton managed to take out several of them.
“The crash was like a war scene,” Edgerton said. “By the time it was over the hood was smashed in, the mirrors were ripped from the doors and the windshield was shattered, but the interior of the car wasn’t affected whatsoever.
“Everyone who came to the scene asked ‘What kind of car is this?’ because they couldn’t believe it was possible to walk away from such a crash.”
One has to wonder if this is a common occurrence in Montana, since the first expression of disbelief was “What kinda car is that?” and not “You just drove into, and killed, a herd of bison.”
