Want a 2011 GT500 of your own? You’d better move fast. Ford revealed it plans on building only 5500 examples of the 550-horsepower muscle machine, and nearly 3300 cars have already been spoken for. The limited production run may help retain some value — good news for owners, perhaps, as they’re shelling out $49,495 for a coupe, and nearly $5000 more for a convertible.
We saw plenty of spy photos this week, although few that didn’t involve a forthcoming Mercedes-Benz model. Industry spies managed to snag photos of a C-Class Coupe prototype, along with test mules for the next-generation S-Class and the new SLK AMG model. Admittedly, we were most impressed with the photos that came from Brazil, showing the new CLS sedan in all its glory well ahead of its Parisian debut.
General Motors has received plenty of questions surrounding the lifespan of the Volt’s lithium-ion battery pack. To help put consumers’ minds at ease, GM announced this week the battery pack would be warranted for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Although it has yet to confirm it will indeed produce the hybrid supercar, Porsche officials have hinted that the 918 Spyder could carry a price tag of nearly $630,000 if it enters production. That hasn’t swayed customers who’ve expressed interest in the car — nearly 2000 individuals have registered their desire for a 918. Good news, considering Porsche has previously said it would need at least 1000 customers to build a business case for production. The 918 is scheduled to make an appearance at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance next month. Could Porsche use the costal venue to make an official production announcement? We can only hope.
Buy a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 or Z06; Build Your Own Engine
Yeah, it’s neat to see the plate on your Corvette ZR1′s engine that tells you which employee built the engine at GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan. But for an extra $5800, that name could be your own. Customers can now build the engine destined for their ZR1 or Z06, and send it off to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where it’ll be shoehorned into your new ‘Vette. For the ultimate summer vacation, you could then travel to the Bluegrass State and watch your fiberglass wonder roll off the assembly line.
