VW Bulli Production Closer to Green Light; Lego Microbus Hits Shelves

Since the VW Bulli concept was first reveal, it has largely remained as a question mark in the automaker’s corporate hallways. But there is promising news to report for fans of the retro microbus.

According to a report by Autocar, VW brass are now “very serious” about green-lighting the VW Bulli, which would be considered the second vehicle in the automaker’s “heritage range” (the Beetle being the first).  This is the first we’ve heard of the heritage range, but VW bosses believe it will play a key role in differentiating the brand from its Korean and Chinese competitors.

“As a designer, I am convinced by this idea,” said group design chief Walter de’Silva. “We don’t have a space for another conventional MPV, but this one would be desirable on a different level, combining practicality with the heritage appeal.”

At the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year, VW unveiled Bulli concept with a zero-emissions, all-electric powertrain. The Autocar reports, however, that a gas-powered version would likely see production as well. The Bulli would be based on the Volkswagen Group’s new Modularer Querbaukasten (MQB) platform that will also roll out on a number of small cars such as the VW Polo, Audi TT and Audi A1. The concept Bulli is configured as a six-seater with exterior dimensions that are roughly smaller than the Kia Soul. Autocar reports that production could start soon enough for the 2014 model year.

Lego Release VW Microbus

And while you’re waiting for the retro VW bus to arrive, Lego has released its version of the VW Camper Van. The video below features the designer of the Lego Microbus as he discusses the challenges that went into creating the iconic “Splitty.” Not surprisingly, the details are amazing: fabric used for the pop-up camper, functional safari windshield glass, and retro-60s interior color scheme complete with a lava lamp. Totally groovy.

Being that my wife and I just bought a Tiguan because this and the California (eurovan) are not yet available in the us I can certainly say that we would want one of these vehicles. We miss a third row greatly.
