BMW has “M,” Mercedes-Benz has AMG, and if Volkswagen has its way, it will soon have “R” — its own wholly owned performance division.
Inside Line reports Volkswagen officials have confirmed the division, comparing it to Audi’s Quattro GmbH subsidiary. An official announcement regarding the new organization is expected to come at the 2010 Geneva motor show in March.
Although Volkswagen already offers a number of its European vehicles in R-line trims, the new R GmbH division reportedly will begin creating performance-tuned R versions of virtually every VW offering from the ground up. Expect to see some scorchers, like the new Golf R.
Presently, there’s no word on if R division models are destined for the U.S., but Volkswagen is pondering the notion of importing the hot 267-hp Golf R — a successor, if you will, to the 2004 and 2010 R32 models — to the U.S. If so, the car could arrive in early 2011.
