While discussing future products plans for the company, Volkswagen of America CEO Stefan Jacoby said that VW will bring the Phaeton sedan back into the U.S.
“That’s our strategy, to have a lineup ending with the Phaeton (luxury sedan). We will bring the Phaeton back to the [U.S.] market,” Jacoby told The Detroit News.
The premium luxury sedan reportedly sells well in Europe, but never found its niche during its previous 3-year stint in the U.S.
Jacoby also commented on the products VW will build at the plant its building in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Along with the NMS midsize sedan, designed exclusively for the U.S. market, VW is contemplating building a new compact SUV in the facility.
According to Jacoby, the NMS sedan will replace the lower-levels of the Passat range, while the slinky CC covers the premium-content models. Jacoby says the sedan will ultimately be available with diesel and hybrid-electric powertrains.
Rumors have also been circulating about VW joining the pickup truck segment and possibly importing the Polo for U.S. consumption. Jacoby confirmed that both rumors are true, but no decision has been made.
“There’s an ongoing discussion whether we should have a vehicle below the Jetta, a kind of entry model into the VW brand,” said Jacoby. “That could be a Polo, or a car in the range of a Polo.”

If I had $100k I would buy a nice 750il or something.
I have no idea what VW is doing. They are bipolar–sometimes they seem so in-line or are setting the trends, sometimes they seem 10 years behind the curve. No one bought the Phaeton even when times were good, they sure has hell aren’t about to buy one now. And if you had $100K to drop on a car … would you spend it on a VW? Hell no–I’d get a Lexus LS or a luxury German brand.
The definition of insanity……….(you know the rest).
P.S. Another Rabbit pickup? Aren’t you about 10 years too late to get into the pickup market?
I agree. The CC would’ve been a good model about 5 years ago when times were good, but a $30,000 Volkswagen is somewhat hard to swallow at the moment. Rename the CC the Passat and bring the Phaeton back and be done with it. And while your at it, VW, get rid of the A8 or you will sell NO CC’s. You are competing against yourself.
I think that should sell the Phaeton in the U.S. again turn the CC into a new Passat.
Does that mean the Passat will be phased out?
