Volkswagen Launches Golf BlueMotion Diesel in Europe

Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion

The new 2010 Golf TDI may be quite thrifty, but Volkswagen has an even more fuel-efficient diesel hatchback in its European portfolio: the new Golf BlueMotion.

The Golf BlueMotion sports a 105 hp, 1.6-liter turbo-diesel I-4 underhood, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission with taller gear ratios. VW also throws in a start/stop system, regenerative braking, and a number of aerodynamic and wheel modifications (i.e. air diffusers, lower ride height, low rolling resistance tires) designed to help improve fuel economy.

On the European test cycle, the BlueMotion returns the equivalent of 61.9 mpg, nearly 20 mpg better than a Golf similar to the U.S.-spec TDI achieves in similar testing. The BlueMotion runs the equivalent of $32,000 in Germany, but there’s little hope for a Golf greener than the 2010 TDI to arrive in our market anytime soon.
