Volkswagen and Cummins are both well regarded for their diesel exploits but the pair are slated to partner up for a new generation of non-automotive, high-compression engines.
Volkswagen and Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, the boating division of the Cummins engine group (a product of which can be found in the current Ram 2500 Heavy Duty), are joining forces to produce future marine products. The deal will see both sides work towards meeting Tier 3 emissions standards in the United States, which go into effect in 2012. The equivalent European diesel standard follows in 2014 and all Volkswagen-manufactured marine engines from 2011 forward will be supplied, marketed, and branded under the Cummins name.
“We bring to the alliance our technological know-how in engine production and the high quality standard of Volkswagen products,” said Dr. Werner Neubauer, Volkswagen board member. “CMD has expert knowledge of marine applications and is well known for its success in marine engine distribution and service. Today’s agreement marks the beginning of a further field of expertise in an automotive-related area and therefore safeguards employment at Volkswagen on a sustainable basis.”
The upcoming 346-horsepower engines will be assembled in Salzgitter, Germany.
