The Volvo V50 may be dead for the 2012 model year, but the premise of a small five-door Volvo isn’t. The Swedish automaker released a teaser photo and video of the new five-door V40 model, which will be unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March.
The photo shows a model under wraps, and offers only that what’s beneath the sheet is “The All-New V40.” In an accompanying video, Volvo Cars CEO Stefan Jacoby has little to say about exactly what the V40 will be, but still manages to wax poetic about the finished product.
“I’m really positive with this car,” Jacoby says. “We’re making a big, big step to moving up to our core competitors.”
Volvo now admits that the V40’s core competitors are the European BMW 1 Series hatchback (which received significant upgrades for 2012), as well as the Audi A3. Even under wraps, it’s apparent that the car keeps Volvo’s signature visual shoulders, and also incorporates a pair of tall tail lamps and an S60-like front clip. Jacoby said that the V40 has “more than three doors,” so we can expect four doors and a rear hatch.
We can also expect that this car won’t be sold in our market. Officials from Volvo Cars North America tell us the new V40 won’t make it to our shores. After killing off the slow-selling V50 wagon, Volvo says it has renewed its commitment to crossovers – like the XC60 and XC90 – for the U.S. Presently, the only wagon-like vehicle in the company’s U.S. portfolio is the butched-up XC70.
There’s no clear indication of what lurks under the hood of the new V40, but the current European S40 has a range of gasoline and diesel engines ranging from 115 to 230 horsepower. Jacoby was tight-lipped about if this V40 will spawn a sedan (a new S40?) or crossover (XC40?) variant, suggesting instead we simply “stay tuned.”
