The Toyota GT86 is going racing in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring endurance race. Toyota has announced that it will campaign two GT86 race cars through Japan’s Gazoo Racing, a longtime motorsports partner of Toyota.
The Toyota GT86, of course, is the same rear-wheel-drive sports coupe sold in the U.S. market as the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S. There’s no word on what differentiates these ‘Ring racers from the production GT86, but we’d assume there are upgrades like roll cages and safety equipment, strong brakes, stickier tires, and firmer suspension. As seen here, the race cars also get a large rear wing and a smattering of new graphics.
Gazoo Racing will campaign a Lexus LFA race car alongside the GT86 pair at the Nürburgring race, which takes place in Germany from May 17 to 20. It’s all part of Toyota’s bid to make young people more interested in sports cars — to that end, Toyota and Gazoo will use the new slogan, “I Love Cars!” to help connect current and budding car enthusiasts at motorsports events.
Last year, Toyota used the 24 Hours of Nürburgring race to show off its GRMN hybrid sports car concept.
