It must be almost New Year’s Eve, as Red Bull announces sponsorship of another action sports event. The energy drink company convinced (easily, we’re sure) Travis Pastrana to set the world record for distance jumped in a rally car.

On New Year’s Eve, Pastrana will jump a rally spec Subaru WRX STI off the Pine Street Pier and land on a floating barge. The current record of 171 feet is held by rally star Ken Block. Pastrana intends to shatter the record in his ramp-to-ramp jump, and we expect a distance well over 180 feet. No stranger to driving, Pastrana holds four consecutive Rally America Championships. “I live for this kind of excitement,” said Pastrana.

Red Bull, famous for its partnerships in extreme sports, held an event last year in Las Vegas to ring in the 2009 New Year. Professional driver Rhys Millen performed a not-so-successful back flip in his off-road truck. Professional stunt rider Robbie Maddison jumped his motorcycle onto the Arc de Triomphe replica at Paris Las Vegas. Maddison also set the motorcycle jumping distance record at the same event a year earlier at the tower bridge in London. His record has since been eclipsed.

Coverage of the event begins December 31 on ESPN at 11 pm EST.
