Toyota and Subaru have delayed the production of their jointly developed sports coupe announced earlier this year. The 2+2 coupe has been pushed back at least 18 months, to 2012, while Toyota discusses the ideal time to start production with Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru’s parent company.
The coupe was rumored to be a “spiritual successor” to the Supra. The car was jointly developed, but would be built by Fuji Heavy Industries for both Toyota and Subaru. Each company’s version of the car was to have different styling and marketing.
Toyota, the number one carmaker in Japan, recently reported its first profit loss in 70 years. It has shelved several projects in the last few months that it considers high risk, including the Lexus LF-A and LF-A Roadster supercars. Toyota has also declined to project global car sales and earnings for 2009.
