We know what you’re thinking: a sport pack? For a Toyota Prius? No, a wormhole hasn’t warped you straight back to April 1st — Toyota is, in fact, announcing it will build limited run of what it calls the Prius Plus Performance Package.
First previewed at last year’s SEMA show, the Prius Plus Performance Package is much more about show than it is go. Those looking for a KERS-like boost system will likely be disappointed to learn the car’s powertrain is unchanged. The package includes a Toyota Racing Development -designed ground effects kit, which adds tweaked front and rear bumper spoilers, side skirts, and a unique rear diffuser.
Also bundled in the package are a few mild suspension modifications, all designed to lower the car to the ground while (theoretically) improving handling. Toyota says vehicles so equipped are dropped 1.1 inches up front and 1.2 inches in back, while the rear suspension is also gifted a sway bar. The company says these modifications “help provide control and confidence while touring, mountain driving, or just plain having fun.” We hope they help remove at least a little of the float from the Prius’ on-road demeanor.
But wait: there’s more. Cars built with the Plus Performance Package receive unique five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum wheels to round out the look. These wheels are fitted with both low-profile tires and wheel spacers, helping lend the hybrid hatchback a slightly wider stance than your typical hypermiling Prius.
Toyota says that the Prius Plus Performance package is the first installment of new Plus hybrid accessories from TRD. The Plus Performance Package will have limited availability, but it should be available for most Prius models for a cost somewhere between between $2999 and $3699.
