In September, more than3.8 million Toyotas were recalled due to reports of unintended acceleration. The Japanese company has now found a solution to the problem and will reshape and replace all 3.8 million-plus gas pedals.
Originally, Toyota said merely removing the floor mats would take care of the problem. But after the issue became such a large problem the company took more drastic measures. Now the company plans to replace every gas pedal and floor mat in the affected vehicles.
In addition to replacing the gas pedal and floor mat, Toyota will install a brake override system on the Toyota Camry, Avalon, and Lexus ES, and IS models involved. The brake override system is “an extra measure of protection.” If the driver presses the brake pedal at the same time as the gas with the system installed, engine power will be cut.
The reshaping of pedals begins early next year, with replacement pedals shaped the same way as the reconfigured ones arriving in the spring. Toyota will allow owners who initially have their pedal reshaped to replace it once the parts arrive.
