Toyota Recall: Prius Recall Coming Soon; Company Says Fix Already In Works

Reuters says Toyota may recall its popular Prius hybrid — at least in Japan — for a brake system software issue that has owners in North America and Japan complaining.

Similar recalls for the Lexus HS250h and Japanese market Toyota Sai hybrids are also expected from Japan’s Transportation Ministry. The two models employ the same braking system as the Prius.

Authorities in the U.S. and Europe will likely follow suit and recall both the Prius and HS250h for the same software glitch. The software glitch reportedly delays braking on uneven or rough surfaces and deals with the transition from ABS to regenerative braking.

A revision was applied to cars manufactured from late January forward, but no service bulletin or recall was issued for 37,000 MY2010 Prius vehicles manufactured before that date.

Yesterday, Toyota spokesman Mike Michels mentioned to Automotive News that details regarding a new Prius ABS tuning solution is currently being developed and should be available early this week.

Toyota has sold 300,000 third-generation Prius models globally. A total of 15,500 Lexus HS250h have been bought, while only 3800 Sais have moved off dealer lots in Japan.
