Toyota’s stand at this week’s Tokyo Auto Salon is stuffed with concepts that run the gamut from cool to crazy, but a couple stand out from the others: a hotter version of the iQ hatchback, a turbocharged Yaris, and three different versions of the critically acclaimed GT 86 sports coupe.
Toyota will show three versions of the GT 86 coupe (known here as the Scion FR-S). We’ve already seen the first, the Gazoo Racing Toyota FT-86 from the 2011 24 Hours of Nurburgring, but the other two are a bit more consumer-focused. The first of those two is the TRD Performance Line GT 86, which adds a new front and rear anti-roll bars, a tweaked suspension setup, a rear diffuser, as well as a full body kit. The other version is the Modellista, which is a customizable GT 86 that allows owners to change the look of their cars.
Meanwhile, the Toyota stand was rife with hot hatchbacks, including a tweaked version of the humble iQ hatchback (also sold here as a Scion).The hot iQ in question is the iQ 130G MT, as tuned by GRMN. The car adds a supercharger to the iQ’s 1.33-liter engine, as well as better brakes, exhaust, and suspension, then tops it off with a six-speed manual transmission to replace the existing continuously-variable box. The result is 2183 pounds and 128 horsepower, which gives it a power-to-weight ratio equal to the Scion tC coupe. The package is topped off with a mildly crazy body kit and 16-inch black Enkei wheels.
If the iQ is a bit too small and slow for you, there’s another option in the form of the GRMN Vitz Turbo. It’s based on the Vitz — known as the Yaris here and in Europe — but turned up a few notches. The car’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine gets a turbocharger to bump the power output to 178 horsepower, and the car gets an uprated suspension and brakes, as well as some 17-inch wheels and a racy paintjob and aerodynamic kit.
The difference between the two cars, of course, is that one of them is definitely headed to production, while the other is a bit less certain. That production-ready car is the iQ, which is planned for a 100-car production run and will be ready for release this summer.
Those five cars, along with plenty of others, will grace the Toyota stand at the Tokyo Auto Salon between now and January 15th.
