If the old adage holds true, cats – tigers included – have nine lives. Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that after serving nine years as Buick’s spokesman, General Motors and PGA golfer Tiger Woods have parted ways.
The move, which ends Woods’ endorsement deal a year early, comes as GM attempts to reduce its marketing costs. Though Woods is a crowd pleaser and the Buick Open tournament continues to be held in Grand Blanc, Michigan, the liaison between golfer and brand is no more.
Statements issued by both Woods and GM itself impart a very amicable tone.
“Tiger has been a great friend to GM,” said Mark La Neve, GM’s North American vice president of sales. “The decision is the result of discussions that started earlier in the year and the timing of this agreement is purely coincidental.”
“We’ve enjoyed a tremendous partnership over the years,” said Woods, who added he and his wife plan to “maintain strong ties with the many people at GM we call friends.”
Whether those ties include an appearance at the 2009 Buick Open tournament remain to be seen. As part of his endorsement deal, Woods had been a guaranteed fixture at the Buick-backed event, though personal issues forced him to withdraw in both 2007 and 2008.
