Playing the Name Game at Geneva.
;Have the car companies run out of names It certainly seems to be the case at this year’s Geneva motor show.
We all laughed last month when Ford decided to reintroduce the Taurus nameplate to the automotive world, but maybe they were onto something – maybe there are just no more good names to be had?
That certainly seems to be the case here at Geneva. Everywhere I look, I see the same names.
I was surprised when I saw the name for Fiat’s new rally car – the Abarth Grande Punto S2000.; The name S2000 already has a permanently reserved spot in my synapses – for the Honda roadster of the same name. Wow, I thought, how strange that Fiat chose that name.
And then, while walking around the Geneva Auto Salon, I encountered another S2000 badge – this time on a Skoda rally car, the Fabia S2000.
Oh, but it didn’t end there.; Hyundai has a new small hatchback called the i30, which sounds a whole lot like the Maxima-badged-as-an-Infiniti I30 that we know and love from the 1990s. And it looks an awful lot like BMW’s 130i. The name, that is, not the car.
And it gets worse – Lotus just introduced the Exige GT3 – which shares its suffix with the Porsche 911 GT3 that was launched a few months ago at the Paris Auto Show. They could have used GT4 – Porsche hasn’t used that one yet.
And then, of course, two of the stars of the show share the same name: The Opel Gran Turismo and the Maserati GranTurismo. Opel quickly changed its concept car’s name to the GTC (for Gran Turismo Concept), but we know that name from the Bentley Continental GTC. So now I think they’re calling it the GT Concept.
Well at least no one has used “Taurus.” Because the alternative seems to be much worse – Tata.
Yes. Behold the Tata Elegante. I’ll stick with Taurus.
