As we reported yesterday, Fisker has announced that it will produce its next generation plug-in hybrid at the recently closed GM plant in Wilmington, Delaware. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has fully backed the decision by Fisker and the Obama Administration to reopen the plant. The Union has urged Fisker to guaranteethat the newly created jobs offer the competitive wages and benefits packages the workers deserve.
The closing of the Delaware plant last summer has affected the entire town, from factory workers themselves to nearby businesses that relied on employee traffic. “By rehiring laid-off workers, the White House and the company [Fisker] are showing a commitment to reinvesting in our national infrastructure,” said Teamsters President Jim Hoffa. He added “The decision by Fisker Automotive to retool the plant and build electric vehicles is an important step in rebuilding our economy.”
We recently spoke with Russell Datz of Fisker Automotive and he told us that no official plans had been made as of yet for rehiring the laid-off UAW members. Fisker is involved in talks with the UAW about utilizing the skilled workers to man the soon-to-reopen plant.
The next-generation Fisker, known as Project Nina, will retail for approximately $48,000. Fisker plans on producing nearly 100,000 vehicles a year from the Wilmington plant.
