Tata Preparing for European Launch in 2010
Tata chairman Ratan Tata is preparing to launch the tiny Nano city car and the Indica in Europe in 2010 with a third model, the Prima, going into production around 2012.
The Tata Nano made headlines everywhere when Tata announced it would sell for around $2000 in India. The version of the Nano heading to Europe is a special “Europa” edition that receives a slightly longer wheelbase and enhanced fit and finish over the India-market Nano.
The biggest changes to the Tata Nano lie under the skin. The Tata Nano Europa will be powered by a three-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed automatic. The India-spec Nano uses a two-cylinder engine and a four-speed manual transmission. The Nano Europa also has ABS, ESP, and air bags to help meet European crash regulations.
Tata is going to release an electric vehicle when the company launches in Europe. The Indica hatchback will be released as a conventional gasoline powered car and as an electric vehicle, called the Indica Vista EV. The Indica Vista EV will use lithium-ion batteries and have a range of 120 miles. The third model to go into production around 2012 will be a luxury sedan called the Prima.
