We’ve been hearing about Pagani’s upcoming C9 supercar for some time now, but the photographers at Motor Trend managed to capture a development mule undergoing testing.
It’s well known that the next-generation Pagani, like a number of upcoming super cars, is going to be fashioned from a heaping of carbon fiber. The latest batch of spy photos gives the best indication of just how much carbon fiber will be found on the car, as the entire rear end appears to be fashioned from bare carbon fiber, revealing that most of the body panels will be made of the lightweight composite. Additionally, Horatio Pagani, owner and founder of the super car maker, earlier told reporters that the chassis would be made of carbon fiber and titanium.
Those exotic materials will help keep weight to a minimum, allowing Pagani’s engineers to maximize performance and fuel economy while cutting emissions. In an earlier interview, Pagani himself said the C9 will make use of a twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter V-12 cribbed from the Mercedes-Benz SL65 Black Series. In the C9, however, the engine may throw down close to 690 horsepower, 29 ponies over the SL, and 737 pound-feet of torque. All this power is reportedly sent to the rear wheels using a ZF sequential manual gearbox, likely either a six- or seven-speed unit.
Although a few body panels appear to be installed for the sake of testing, MT says this C9 is largely intact, and close to production form, no less. The car bears some resemblance to the outgoing Zonda, although the front clip is considerably taller, likely in order to meet crash standards across the globe.
