Subaru’s BRZ Prototype Coupe Spied Yet Again

It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for the Toyobaru coupe to come to fruition,  and these latest spy shots don’t exactly alleviate our anticipation. While Subaru continues to show a BRZ powertrain layout model at auto shows around the globe, our friends at Motor Trend caught an actual prototype running in the real world.

At this stage, there’s little – if anything – shown here that should come as a surprise. The BRZ’s form echoes that of its Toyota siblings – the FT-86 and Scion FR-S, respectively – although the Lexus LFA influence in the front fascia is toned down in ever so slightly.

While finalized styling remains a mystery, Subaru has already disclosed some information about the car’s mechanical bits. Power will come from a horizontally-opposed, direct-injection four-cylinder, and — despite Subaru’s all-wheel-drive tradition – will only be sent to the rear wheels. Output is estimated to be close to the 200-hp mark, although there’s always the possibility of a high-performance STI version down the road.

So, when will we finally see the completed package? Subaru still won’t say, but seeing as the Tokyo auto show is just around the corner, we wouldn’t be horribly surprised if the BRZ somehow winds its way onto Subaru’s display stand. Fingers crossed, as we’ve had enough of the waiting…
