The drop-top Cabriolet version of the new Porsche 911 was only revealed in January at the Detroit auto show, but already Porsche is at work on a hotter version. Our spy photographers caught a glimpse of a new, 991-generation version of the 911 Turbo Cabriolet.
We’ve actually spied the next 911 Turbo Cabriolet before, and as with that example, this test mule sports the quad exhaust tips and widened rear haunches that betray a turbocharged model. This tester also has a prominent rear wing, likely a powered one that automatically raises and lowers at speed, as well as a roll bar behind the front seats.
It’s still unknown what will power the new 911 Turbo, but reports suggest Porsche will adopt a triple-turbocharged flat-six engine. The third turbo would likely be very small and designed to spin up quickly, countering turbo lag. Horsepower ratings for the new car should beat those of its predecessor; the old Turbo made 500 hp from a twin-turbo, 3.8-liter flat-six, while the Turbo S stretched that engine to 530 hp.
Like previous 911 Turbo models, the new Porsche will have all-wheel drive. A manual transmission will probably be offered, although Porsche engineers have hinted that all models will soon adopt the PDK dual-clutch transmission as standard — after all, more than three-quarters of the last-generation 911 sold with a PDK.
Don’t expect the 911 Turbo Cabriolet to debut for some time. We expect that Porsche will first focus on launching a restyled Panamera sedan in 2013, followed by a 911 Targa in 2014.
