The Porsche 918 Spyder is already a legendary car: it’s a car that’ll cost $845,000 and produce a maximum of 770 hp and 552 lb-ft of torque, and potentially be the fastest Porsche road car of all time. But our spy photographers caught a shot of the upcoming supercar lapping the Nurburgring with some pretty serious Porsche history both on its exterior and within its interior.
The car was spotted in a monochromatic version of the famed Martini Racing livery, a black-and-white tribute to the red, white, and blue Martini paintjobs that graced many historic Porsche racecars, including the 917. It’s curious to see this, considering that the last 918 we spotted had a black-and-white tribute to the Gulf Racing colors that adorned 917 racers back in the early 1970s. If these varied prototypes are supposed to tell us anything, it’s this: the 918 is a perfect successor to the powerful Porsche race cars that came before it.
But wait, there’s more. Who’s that behind the wheel? It’s none other than Rally Hall of Famer/ Porsche racer and test-driver Walter Rohrl.
Other than a few racing stripes and a famous driver (and some canard spoilers up front), however, the car you see in the photos below is nearly identical to the last prototype we saw, which means a massively powerful 4.6-liter V-8 and double electric motor setup, a 202 mph top speed, and a peak efficiency figure of 78 mpg. It’s currently available for order and will go into production on September 18th (9/18, of course) of next year.
