Porsche may still be wrestling with what models it wants to add to its porfolio, but in the meantime, development continues on its next-generation Boxster. In fact, our friends at Motor Trend recently caught a development prototype out for a jaunt at the Nürburgring.
Although the next-generation Boxster isn’t set to debut until 2012, we’ve managed to learn a fair amount about the car. As of writing, the next Boxster will still be the least expensive Porsche money can buy, as the four-cylinder, sub-Boxster, model has reportedly been placed on hold while Porsche irons out its business plan.
That said, the next Boxster will grow in size, leaving room for a smaller model to eventually join the lineup while simultaneously increasing interior space. Don’t equate extra size with excess heft; we hear the new car will actually weigh less than the current car, thanks in no small part to extensive use of lightweight materials.
Subsequently, expect Porsche to add smaller engines to the Boxster line. Today’s Boxster is powered by a 255-horsepower, 2.9-liter flat-six-cylinder engine, but the new car will reportedly receive a 2.7-liter flat six. The Boxster S, however, will likely retain its 3.4-liter flat-six, although it’s expected to crank out 315 horsepower instead of the current 310.
We don’t expect the Boxster and Boxster S to be the only variants offered. A 2.5-liter twin-turbocharged flat-four-cylinder is also under development, and reportedly capable of pumping out 360 horsepower. Additionally, Porsche has indicated it’s interested in offering a hybrid-electric version of each of its model lines, including the Boxster. Further, the company’s also testing a small number of electric-powered Boxsters next year — if successful, the company could elect to push it to full scale production.
