News of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta has permeated the interwebs, and we want to know what you think.
We broke the news to you earlier that Volkswagen had unveiled the latest Jetta, and offered few details on the upcoming model’s specs and performance. Based on the photograph we showed you, the compact-ish VW is as sharp as ever, as the automaker tries to distance it from the Golf.
However, as we pointed out in this morning’s retrospective, not all Jettas were created equal. The boxy MkI Jetta that debuted nearly 30 years ago is, literally, decades apart from the sleek, taut MkVI.
So, today’s Snap Judgment: Which Jetta holds a special place in your heart?
Have a particular affinity for the short-lived EcoDiesel? Or do you just wish there were still a two-door Jetta? Let us know what you think in comments, below.

My first car was a 1990 Jetta GL with the 5-Speed and manual crank sunroof. It was great. I got about 32 MPG, it was plenty zippy around town, and all of the newer ones seem to have much less rear leg room, and all kinds of electrical problems. When I first bought it I was amazed at how well the Germans know how to build cars; now I’m a bit disenchanted with how dumbed down they’ve become. And who’s idea was the 5 cylinder engine?
I own a 2006 VW Jetta TDI with the “Package 2″ options. I couldn’t replace it (if I wanted to) They have decontented the new Jetta’s to the point where they force you to buy ‘up market’ to the CC to get back the missing creature comforts of the old Jetta.
Then, no TDI, so I think VW’s new Jetta for the Masses will be taking up space on dealers lots while option loaded family gas powered sedans with better warranties and great new designs are flying off the showroom floors.
(think new Honda Accord SE’s with leather heated seats for under $24,000, the popular selling, Hyundai Sonata’s with the huge warranty, even the Chevy Cruze at 40 mpg’s etc etc)
VW is now about 4 model years behind the trends and don’t even know it.
A few yrs ago, my old 2000 Jetta TDI got 57mpg on a trip to the North Shore of Lake Superior, and that was after accidentally putting in 7 gallons of 92 octane gasoline with the rest good old, Euro-diesel. To make sure the enviro-Gestapo doesn’t come knocking at my door, I would consider a TDI again. ‘The Green Police are knocking round in my head…’
I really like the current generation car, especially in GLI or TDI SportWagen forms.
Ha! First car I really ever wanted and begged my parents to help me buy when I first got a drivers license was a 1986 Jetta 1.6L Diesel. I still remember the blue color, smell and sound. My parents making me rely on my own means I ended up getting a 76 Rabbit for $500. I do have to say that the 2011 VW Jetta Coupe at the Detroit show was easy on the eyes!
I adored the current car — but if the new one is just as good but incorporates some interior upgrades, I think I’ll have to lend my vote to the MY’11 car. Can’t wait to sample one.
