Speculating about GMC’s future products yesterday, our excitement at the news of a production Granite might have been premature. Rumors and speculation aside, isn’t the Granite the GMC we’ve been waiting for?
The Granite first caught our attention when it appeared as a concept at the 2010 North American International Auto Show. Its body, which we called a “rounded box” with the pushed-out wheels and visual flair and of a Volkswagen GTI, was designed to appeal to a younger, more hip audience. It certainly represented a marked departure from truck-based Yukons and Sierras.
Yesterday, following a General Motors future planning meeting, our hope in seeing a production Granite was renewed. We speculated there might be solid plans to push the Granite into production, using GM’s Delta II platform, which serves the likes of the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze.
We were disappointed to find out that, unfortunately, it’s still hype. GM North America president Tom Stephens said, “with GMC, we’re looking to build on the popularity of the Acadia and Terrain, to attract a younger demographic to our ‘Professional Grade’ products.”
But what do you think? Is GMC ready for a Professional Grade vehicle for young professionals?
Today’s Snap Judgment:
Should GMC build the Granite?

YES! This baby should be produced WITH the suicide doors as per the prototype! I understand the engineering issues associated, but GMC is supposed to be a functionality brand. I just hope they leave the interior with a rough and ready options package so I don’t have to worry about getting the floors dirty when I start putting its functionality to the test.
Absolutely yes. For those considering a smaller SUV/CUV, this one is great in terms of looks and perceived utility. If they add a turbo, it would be also be lots of fun to drive.
No way..GM still has too many competing models
^GM is already glut with
NO. Dilutes the brand, and GM is already with trucks/SUVs/crossovers
