Recently, we learned that Honda has dropped plans to advance clean diesel technology, and will instead focus its efforts on producing hybrids and increasing fuel efficiency.
Honda’s announcement comes at a time when many manufacturers are flip-flopping on their decisions to offer alternatives to traditional, gas-powered vehicles. In the short term, this might mean an end to colorful TV ads. In the long term, though, will it hurt Honda’s ability to compete?
We’ve seen automakers change their mind before. Diesel pioneers Volkswagen and Audi wavered on the adoption of hybrid technology, but recently introduced hybrid SUVs and luxury cars, and electric supercars. We were rooting for Honda to introduce the European Accord diesel in the Acura TSX, but the latest news might mean that’s not likely. And Suzuki has even put plans for a Kizashi hybrid or V-6 on hold.
Today’s Snap Judgment:
Is it a good idea for Honda to abandon diesel technology and focus on hybrids?

In my estimation Honda screwed up by not bringing their diesel to the USA. They just chickened out! I was primed and ready to buy one of the TSX Diesels. Who wants a hybrid if you have to drive it like a grandma to get the mileage. Diesels you can drive them the way you want and still get the mileage. Honda, you stink! VW TDI here I come!
Hybrid Diesels,Turbo Diesels are most definetely the way forward .10 years ago in Europe i was driving a 2.0litre TDI with 50 MPGThey are stronger engines, the torque and longevity for the long distance tourer is the better option. With a gasoline hybrid ,take away the hybrid for the town commute and you only have a 1.5,1.8 litre small engine for those long distance hauls.I wait for the days we have at least the option in a small SUV,hatchback, station wagon,I am not alone,i talk to many many Americans who think the same.Honda make a 2.2 Litre diesel engine for the European market that is breathtaking, they are refined, quiet, and awsome.I have driven it.The French and the Germans have excellent examples of diesel technology too.65% of Europeans card drivers cannot be wrongSo why not here?Bottom line is pure cost that the Manufacturers do not want to pay,for the 52 state emmisions laws we have.Europe has strict emmission laws too.Have I missed something?
Diesels are a hard sell for Americans. It’s the old thought that diesels are loud, smoke, are for trucks and you have to find the pump for it. There are gas stations that don’t offer diesel and others that have it off to the side for big rigs. Those can be confusion to someone who doesn’t know. There are two pumps for each stall (rigs have tanks on both sides), air hoses for air brakes, and you almost always have to go in to pay. The infrastructure just isn’t there. That is part of the reason diesel has been more per gallon than regular gas at times.
It depends on the application. I like diesels and they are usually more fun to drive than hybrids. However, if the hybrid is tuned similar to the 918 Spyder (more moderate price and power), where the motor can propel the car without gas or the gas engine and electric motor can work together for a sportier feel, I’m game.
