Downsizing, it seems, is the key to success — especially in Europe. We’ve just read reports from WhatCar? claiming that Audi’s board of management is reportedly eying yet another small car, possibly powered by an electric drivetrain.
That’s nifty, but Audi already has two small cars on its docket. The A1, which premiered at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, shares its platform with the Volkswagen Polo, and may potentially be offered as an EV or a hybrid in the years to come. A second-generation A2, due in 2013, will ride atop VW’s New Small Family platform (think Volkswagen Up! concepts). Is there really room for a sub-A1 model (an A0?) — or yet another subcompact offering — in Audi’s portfolio?
Today’s Snap Judgment:
Just how small should Audi go?
Should the luxury carmaker pursue an eco-friendly, Smart ForTwo-sized runabout to mingle with the likes of the new BMW Megacity or the Aston Martin Cygnet? Could the company tap into its DKW and NSU roots to craft an electric cycle to compete against BMW’s next-generation C1?

An A1, or something smaller, would be a neat Smart competitor. Going much smaller than that, though, and you’re in T.25 territory.
It’d be awesome if Audi would sell the A1 here in the states, and that’s probably was small as they could go in this market. The rest of the world would accept a smaller Smart sized Audi, but what would you call that? The Audi 1/2? The Audi Zero?
