At the end of August, Mazda previewed a new design language, Kodo, on the Shinari concept sedan. The sedan’s long hood and flowing lines scored well with you, our readers, who preferred the “soul of motion” displayed in the Shinari to the strakes and slashes in the upcoming 2011 Mazda5.
Now, Mazda is turning its attention to adapting Kodo to its small cars, as seen in a YouTube video uploaded by Mazda Australia. The video uses a theoretical computer model of a hatchback designed with elements of Kodo, and shows variations on the same design presented into different shades, hues, and textures.
The text beneath the video hints that the hatchback pictured is neither indicative of the next Mazda2 hatchback or Mazda3, but provides a general idea of how the styling could be applied. We particularly like the concept of the profile of a cheetah morphing into a hatchback. The shape of the design is also reminiscent of Alfa Romeo’s recent MiTo hatchback — not a bad thing.
What do you think? Is the hatchback a natural evolution of the theme, or does it stretch Kodo too far? You can view the video HERE.

Ive been really curious as to what Mazda has up their sleeves for the new design. From what Ive seen in these videos I really think they’re stepping in the right direction with this one. I was so dissapointed with the latest design scheme. Especially after how nice the first generation 3 turned out to be. I still to this day find myself looking at the new 3 trying to push myself to like it. So yes, I’m looking forward for Mazda to get as far away from designing cars that look like this
Yes do it… even though I’m a total Nissan guy and loved the Infiniti Essence… I like Mazda’s version better!
