Well, that didn’t take long. After revealing that its Nagare design theme’s time was up, Mazda took no time in readying its next venture. Today, we learned about Mazda’s new design theme, Kodo, which was previewed to journalists on the Shinari concept sedan.
Kodo, which is Japanese for “soul of motion,” is a relaxing, eye-soothing change of pace from Nagare’s “thrusting motion.” The concept car pictured here apes the design of long-hooded luxury sedans, such as the Aston Martin Rapide and the stillborn Fisker Karma.
But is this theme right for Mazda, which currently produces the stylish-yet-inoffensive Mazda6 sedan? Or, at a time when Mazda’s other big news surrounds powertrain development, will this be a one-two wallop at its competition?
Today’s Snap Judgment:
Do you like Mazda’s new design theme?
Let us know what you think of Kodo’s lines in the comments section below.

I really like the new design direction. Unlike Autodesigner I think it looks modern and very elegant. It’s certainly a step away from the cluttered Nagare design theme.
No. Looks like an old 50′s British sports car.But ANYTHING would look better than Mazda’s current styling.(well, almost)
I say build this beauty now!!! It’s elegant, sporty mature and practical enough (as a hatchback) that it makes a great “flagship” in addition to the next RX themed sports car. While I love the RX-8 idea… the styling always seemed a little over the top as a “mature” sports car and this “Kudo” theme is… as far as I’m concerned… the BEST direction for Mazda design to head in.(The overly styled Nagare theme seemed to hit the wall when they applied it to the Mazda 5 mini minivan.)This would be a perfect “mature” replacement for the RX-8 4 seater if powered by a 6 cylinder “Sky” engine. Perhaps as Mazda’s “MX-9″ version of serious sport sedan (or is that 4 door “coupe”)… based on an adaptable, shortened, strengthened (and lightened) rwd/awd/fwd Mazda 6 platform? This would free up room for the RX-7 as a dedicated premium 2 seater in Mazda’s line up once they figure how to make the platform work for both the RX series and Mx-5 Miata series.I hope they have the money do something like this. I’m sure it would work as really vehicles are now becoming a “want” rather than a necessity for many people. Something like this Shinari could do very well. But what do I know… I just love sharp looking vehicles with fun driving characteristics, right? Not many others like me out here is there?
