Shortly after the Volkswagen Up! made its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, Skoda provided details on yet another Up! variant: the Citigo, an all-new urban runabout, which is almost a carbon-copy of its VW-badged relative.
Apart from a unique grille, headlamps, and bumper fascia, the Citigo bears a close resemblance to its Volkswagen sibling. For starters, they have the same dimensions: both are about 140 inches in length, use a 95-inch-long wheelbase, and provide seating for four passengers. Cargo space behind the rear seats measures about 8.9 cubic feet, but grows to 33.6 cubic feet once the rear seats are folded down.
The similarities continue under hood, where the Citigo will be available with two new 1.0-liter three-cylinder gas engines. A 59-hp version allows the Citigo to move from 0-62 mph in 13.9 seconds, and hit a top speed of 99 mph. A 74-hp variant makes the same run in 12.7 seconds, and boasts a top speed of 106 mph. Both will be mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
The Skoda does manage to best the Volkswagen variant in one way. a five-door VW Up! is still forthcoming, the Citigo launches in both three- and five-door variants from square one.
The Skoda Citigo will debut in the Czech market in late 2011, and launch in other European countries in the summer of 2012.
