SEMA starts this week, and Kia is prepared to bring two concepts based on the fully redesigned Sportage to the hottest automotive show in the Las Vegas desert.
The two CUVs were crafted with the assistance of Antenna magazine. Beginning with the professional offering, the metallic blue Sportage is called “Work” and is designed to endure the daily grind of the everyday businessperson. The cargo area actually contains a full closet and dressing station with room for two full suits, five dress shirts, five belts, ties, and an electric razor. A track-driven shoe rack holds footwear and there is also room for cufflinks and a watch.
The Sportage’s exterior isn’t radically changed from stock, with changes limited to wheels, roof rack trim, bumper inserts, and a new front grille insert. Inside, the interior gets taken up a notch through tan leather upholstery with a diamond stitching design. The door inserts are now leather and custom carpeting invades the rest of the cabin. Memphis Audio supplied the new sound system and a full range of current technology — Motorola Droid X, iPad, Bluetooth keyboard — keep the idealized working man (and woman) connected to the world around them.
The red-colored Sportage is designated “Play” and was built for the active urban male. Key to this modified CUV is the Yakima roof rack with the red and black Cannondale QuikFX road bicycle. Out back, a motorized, stainless-steel barbeque grill with 22-inch LCD television attachment remains at the ready for those tailgating times. Flat-black 20-inch MRR HR4 wheels give the Sportage a different look.
The interior hasn’t been forgotten. Inside, you’ll find black leather with red stitching and suede accenting, Memphis audio speakers, an iPod Touch, and an Olympus E-PL1 digital camera. A Mac Mini with wireless keyboard and mouse, speakers, and Wi-Fi are housed near the BBQ grille, creating an experience filled with two all-time male favorites: grilled food and electronics.
Be sure to check back later this week as we extensively cover the 2010 SEMA show.
