It’s a truism that Americans won’t buy diesels. But Volkswagen, which now offers TDI engines in four different models, is proving that theory isn’t necessarily true.
More than one in five VWs that rolled out of dealerships in March did so under diesel power. The individual model percentages were 15% for the Jetta, 44% for the Touareg SUV, and an astounding 58% for the Golf. (The new Passat, just now going on sale, also offers a TDI, and VW product planners expect a take rate similar to the Jetta’s.)
Maybe there’s hope for diesel in America after all.
