RWD Electric Infiniti Concept Teased Again Before Geneva Motor Show

This isn’t the first we’re hearing about a range-extended electric car from Infiniti; in fact, the brand has previously promised to show us an all-new concept at next year’s Geneva Motor Show. However, Infiniti has released two new images of the concept that are a little clearer.

Though details are still sketchy, what we do know is that the range-extended electric Infiniti will most likely boast a rear-wheel drive platform some sort of mid-mounted powertrain. In a prepared statement, Andy Palmer, EVP of Nissan and Infiniti, said that this car will be “our vision for a totally new kind of inspired premium performance car. Infiniti already has hybrid and clean diesel models on sale. And with an all-electric sedan on the way, the natural next step was to push the boundaries where performance and the environment intersect.”

Expect to see the 80-kw electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack from the Leaf to carry over. What engine will operate as the range extender has yet to be seen, nor do we know yet if it will be powered by a gas or diesel engine. No matter the decision, Infiniti promises that the new car will be able to have the ability to run in a pure electric mode.

The luxury range-extended electric segment is just beginning to heat up, as Infiniti’s offering  will be the second of the sort after Cadillac’s ELR, which shares its mechanicals with the Chevrolet Volt.
