RUF Builds “Stormster,” an Electric Porsche Cayenne

2010 Eruf Stormster Based On The Porsche Cayenne

Porsche-tuner RUF took a different turn earlier this year, and unveiled a new line of electric-powered “eRUF” cars at the Geneva Motor Show. While the first — the Greenster — was built off the venerable 911, the firm’s latest offering — the Stormster — is based on the Cayenne SUV.

Although Porsche is working on a Cayenne Hybrid, RUF’s Stormster is powered solely by electricity. A 367-hp (270 kW) electric motor from Siemens (similar to the motor used in the Greenster) is its only form of propulsion. According to RUF, Sprinting from 0-62 mph takes about 10 seconds, and the SUV has a top speed of 93 mph.

Converting the Cayenne to an electric SUV required adding some significant weight in the form of lithium-ion batteries. Although RUF used lithium-ion batteries, the Stormster still weighs in at a hefty 5874 lbs, almost 1000 lbs more than a standard Cayenne. All those batteries, however, allow the Stormster to travel 120 miles on one charge.

As with the Greenster, RUF will produce a limited number of these electric SUVs. RUF has not disclosed the price of its electric SUV, but expect to pay a significant premium. After all, it’s not easy being green…
