BMW is set to expand Mini’s model lineup in the near future and may include a Rolls-Royce-trimmed option as a super high-end model.
British car magazine Autocar reports that “well-placed” sources say the Rolls-trimmed Mini is very close to getting the green light for production. It would be established as a custom version of the premium small car.
If the project gets the green light, purchasers of the super high-end Mini would be able to visit the Rolls-Royce factory in Goodwood, England, to select the interior components. The interior of the vehicle will be reworked in supple leather and various dashboard finishes available on Rolls-Royce models. Buyers will also be able to pick the Mini up from the Rolls factory.
This new Mini project shows BMW’s dedication to expanding the lineup and using Mini’s original heritage as inspiration. In the 1960s, Mini Coopers with extremely high-end reworked interiors became popular. Those cars, however, were done by independent coach builders. As BMW owns Rolls-Royce now, why not use the storied luxury marque to build the high-end Minis?
Mini executives believe that a Mini with the luxury interior of a much larger car has become relevant again because of the current downsizing trend. There are no price estimates right now, but when Peter Sellers ordered his Mini in 1963, it cost him £2600 ($4250) instead of £679 ($1110). If the same increase is to be expected, this puts the Rolls-Mini around $74,000 today.
