Rolls-Royce Officially Names New Model, Brings Back Ghost Moniker
Up until now, the forthcoming Rolls-Royce model was known as the RR4. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars CEO, Tom Purves, announced at the Shanghai motor show the new model will be known as the Rolls-Royce Ghost.
The Rolls-Royce Ghost name is meant to evoke the grandeur of the original Ghost model. It was produced between 1906 and 1925 and was immediately recognizable as a Rolls. In total, 7876 of the original Rolls-Royce Ghosts were produced.
While the original Ghost model was introduced as the 40/50 hp models with a three-speed manual transmission, the new model far eclipses its namesake. Early technical specifications from Rolls-Royce show the company is no longer sticking with its storied 6 ¾-liter V-12 and instead using a 6.6-liter turbocharged V-12. The new engine will produce over 500 hp and be coupled to ZF’s new eight-speed automatic transmission.
“We are delighted to formally announce the Rolls-Royce Ghost. It is one of the most revered names in the automotive industry, evoking images of adventure and technical innovation,” said Purves at the announcement of the Ghost. “The name reflects this model’s breadth of abilities. The first cars to bear the Ghost name were known not only for impressive dependability and refinement but also great flair and style. This car will be the first in a new generation of models to carry this evocative name and will give us two pinnacle product lines- Phantom and Ghost.”
The new model will have its own production line at Rolls-Royce’s Goodwood production facility. The facility has been expanded over the last 18 months to prepare for the addition of a new model. Both models will use the same paint, wood, and leather workshops, so expect almost identical treatment of the luxurious interior of the Phantom to carry over.
The Rolls-Royce Ghost goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2009 at an unannounced price. As the Ghost will slot under the Phantom in Rolls-Royce’s lineup, it will carry a starting price under the Phantom’s starting price of $380,000.
