Rinspeed’s Electric BamBoo Concept to Debut at Geneva Show

Tired of the horsepower-driven rat race? So too is Swiss tuning firm Rinspeed. Instead of crafting a powerful sports car for the 2011 Geneval Motor Show, the company plans instead on showing the BamBoo concept — an electrified, four-passenger beach buggy.

“Anyone not blinded by horsepower orgies, chrome tinsel, and top-speed frenzy should take a closer look,” Rinspeed’s release states.

The BamBoo’s styling reminds us of the vintage Citroen Mehari and Fiat Jolly models, but this new retromobile is actually electric powered and, Rinspeed says, there’s a foldable electric two-wheeler onboard, too. Rinspeed takes pride in the BamBoo’s simple, clean lines, suggesting that nothing is superfluous. As you may have guessed, many interior parts are made from bamboo fibers.

The BamBoo is the latest vehicle in Rinspeed’s annual tradition of bringing wacky concepts to the Geneva show. Some may remember the Ariel Atom-like 1653-pound eXasis from 2007 or the submersible (and electric powered) sQuba. At the 2009 show, Rinspeed introduced the sleek iChange, which can change from a one-person speedster to accommodating three people at the push of a button. Last year, Rinspeed presented the UC?, a very small car that can be transported by train if the need arises, thanks to its railcar loading system.

Until we have a chance to see the latest concept from Rinspeed for ourselves at the Geneva Motor Show, what do you think of the BamBoo?
