Renault-Nissan and Daimler recent embarked in an ambitious global alliance, designed to benefit each firm by sharing components, technologies, and development costs. Nissan has previously indicated it was interested in using Daimler-sourced mechanicals for new Infiniti models, but the automaker recently revealed that talks have progressed to an “advanced stage.”
According to Bloomberg, Colin Dodge, an executive vice president at Nissan, told reporters that the company was on the verge of signing off on the decision, saying Nissan managers planned on “finalizing our discussions on Saturday.” Corporate officials have apparently been pleasantly surprised by Daimler’s platforms; earlier this week, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn told French newspaper Le Monde that the architectures are much less expensive than originally anticipated.
Details on the Daimler-based Infiniti still remain evasive, but Bloomberg does suggest the new model would be sold in North America, Europe, and China. That could be a sign that an Infiniti compact car is nigh, but the Daimler-sourced vehicle may well be a compact crossover built off Mercedes-Benz’s B-Class. L’Automobile reported earlier this year that such a vehicle — reportedly dubbed DX — would allow Infiniti to go toe-to-toe in Europe with the BMW X1 and the long rumored Audi Q3 in Europe, but a compact Infiniti sedan would allow the brand to counter the 1 Series and A3, respectively, in multiple corners of the world.
Speculation still surrounds the Infiniti project, Nissan-Renault-Daimler’s other collaborations are a little more transparent. The three firms are looking to team up to develop commercial vehicles and vans, as well as engineer small vehicles. It’s more than likely that the next-generation Smart ForTwo, ForFour, and Renault Twingo will likely share a common platform.
