Although the impressive MP4-12C supercar only recently debuted, McLaren is already working at its successor. According to Autocar, McLaren will launch a halo car — nicknamed the “Mega Mac” — in 2014 — with the Bugatti Veyron squarely in its sights.
The key ingredient for the Veyron-fighting McLaren is said to be a 5.0-liter V-8 engine developed in cooperation with Ricardo. Output could be as high as 799 hp and 599 lb-ft of torque. That’s quite a wallop, and considerably higher than the 592 hp and 443 lb-ft packed in the MP4-12C’s Ricardo-developed twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8.
Although those numbers pale in comparison to the Bugatti’s output figures — 1001 hp and 922 lb-ft in standard guise, 1200 hp and 1106 lb-ft in Super Sport trim — the McLaren should be able to keep up with or outpace the Veyron through the virtue of reduced weight and carefully-honed aerodynamics. Like the MP4-12C, the new flagship will be built extensively from carbon fiber, with an upgraded version of the car’s pushrod-style suspension.
Autocar says the new McLaren could hit 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds, 100 mph in 5.5 seconds, and accomplish the 0-to-200-mph dash in just 20 seconds flat. No top speed goal has been divulged, but it goes without saying it would trump the MP4-12C’s maximum velocity of 205 mph. And if McLaren truly wants to take on Bugatti, they’ll need to match or beat the 268-mph top speed of the all-conquering Veyron Super Sport.
Other tech specs include Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, a seven-speed dual clutch transmission, active front and rear spoilers, and an air-brake system. A production run would be limited to just 500 cars, each priced somewhere around a lofty £350,000 to £400,000, which works out to roughly $567,000 to $650,000 using today’s exchange rates. The MP4-12C starts at a comparatively reasonable $229,000, before gas-guzzler and destination charges.
Remember when everyone predicted stricter fuel-economy rules would kill off 200-mph-plus supercars? McLaren never got the memo — and that’s just fine by us.
