Volkswagen isn’t the only automaker bringing some wild SUVs to the Qatar Motor Show. We managed to spot a pair of sport-tuned sport-utes on the show floor that also promise some incredible performance.
With some legendary off-road credentials and nearly 507 horsepower on tap, the Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG is already a pretty outrageous (and ostentatious) SUV — but that hasn’t stopped the automaker from crafting a special Arabia Limited Edition model for the Middle Eastern market. Admittedly, the modifications are subtle, limited mostly to black trim pieces, wheels, and a single paint stripe down the sides of the vehicle.
Mechanically speaking, the G55 Arabia Edition is the splitting image of stock G55 models. Power still comes from a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8, and is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system complete with locking front, center, and rear differentials.
Want something a little more unusual? The L60, built by Japanese tuning firm Invader, may be more up your alley. Built upon Lexus’ giant LX570, the SUV is given some outrageous modifications inside and out.
Starting with the exterior, Invader grafts on a widebody kit that’s simply out of this world. The front fascia receives three giant air intakes, along with new fog lamp surrounds, a lip spoiler vertically arranged portholes. L60s also receive new side skirts that double as running boards, 22-inch forged wheels, and a lowered rear bumper with an integrated rear diffuser.
You’ll also note four exhaust tips protruding from that modified bumper. Those are plumbed to a supercharged form of Lexus’ 5.7-liter V-8, which cranks out an insane 600 horsepower — roughly 217 horsepower over the stock engine. Invader promises a host of suspension and brake modifications to handle that power, but we’ve yet to see detailed specifications on the conversion.
Predictably, Invader bathes the interior with leather hides, although it allows customers to customize the exact décor scheme used. This particular example was equipped with a cream-on-red combination, which was accented with carbon fiber trim pieces. Taste apparently isn’t universal…
Production of both the G55 Arabia and the L60 are limited to roughly 100 each, and will primarily — if not exclusively — be sold to customers in the Middle East.
