For the 2012 model year, SMS Supercars has introduced two new versions of its 302 Mustang, each paying homage to SteveSaleen’sstoried racing career. The new 2012 SMS White and Yellow Label Mustangs, along with the existing 302 Black Label, start at $35,000 and offer buyers in excess of 440 horsepower.
The 302 White Label is the runt of the litter, with “only” 440 horsepower (38 ponies more than a stock 2012 Mustang GT) on tap from a slightly tweaked but normally-aspirated 5.0-liter V-8. The White Label also gains a host of performance bits, including modified suspension, a less restrictive exhaust, and both interior and exterior cosmetic baubles. For the power garnered, the 302 White Label is a relative bargain at $35,540 (not including destination) — roughly $5500 more than a stock 2012 Mustang GT.
The next step brings buyers to the so-called 302 Yellow Label. Although the car looks similar to the White Label Mustang, the Yellow Label package adds an extra 105 horsepower (bringing the total to 545) thanks in part to an SMS-sourced supercharger. Also included are new 19-inch wheels and performance-rated tires. Pricing for the 302 Yellow Label stickers at $45,540 without destination.
The king of SMS’ Mustang lineup remains the 2012 302 Black Label. The supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 still lurks underhood, but its output is increased to a healthy 575 horsepower. Black label cars will also receive a unique aerodynamic body kit, a suspension tuning kit designed to Steve Saleen’s tastes, a custom leather interior, and — if so desired — custom exterior paint. Pricing for the 2012 302 Black Label has yet to be announced, but we can safely assume that it will easily top the $50,000 mark.
Why create so many twists on SMS’ basic 302 Mustang package? According to Saleen himself, it was literally a matter of giving (horse)power to the people, including those who typically couldn’t afford a full-blown SMS conversion.
“I wanted to produce the finest vehicles in keeping with my performance and lifestyle philosophy and succeeded with the previously released top of the line SMS vehicles,” Saleen said in a prepared statement. “Like many consumers and enthusiasts, I recognize the economic challenges facing us and want to provide additional choices, well within the purchase consideration of a very wide range of buyers.”
