Porsche Panamera to Spawn a Convertible?

Porsche Panamera

Could Porsche’s controversial Panamera sedan possibly spawn a two-door convertible version?

According to Automotive News, the answer is “yes.” The trade journal spoke to a number of sources who suggest such a vehicle is possible, including Porsche development chief Wolfgang Duerheimer.

“We have a broad range of 14 derivatives of the 911 that are very successful,” he said. “So it stands to reason we should diversify the lineup for the Panamera as well.”

Presently, only three variants — S, 4S, and Turbo — are offered in the United States. If a convertible were to join the lineup, it would still seat four passengers (think of the roofline!) and possibly carry a $16,000 premium over the sedan.

Other opportunities to expand the Panamera architecture may also lieahead. Automotive News reports a VW executive claimed the Porsche “offers the potential for synergies,” which suggests some sort of sharing between Porsche and other VW group brands — Bentley and Lamborghini, for instance — could be in the cards.
