Hot on the heels of Audi announcing its withdrawal from the American LeMans Series, we’ve learned Porsche has chosen not to return to the ALMS’ LMP2 class for 2009.
According to the official ALMS site, Porsche’s pull-out was “not unexpected,” and is not as surprising as Audi’s announcement (which the ALMS describes as “devastating”). It also seems as if Porsche will retain some involvement in the series – the withdrawal affects only the RS Spyders run in the LMP2 class; the 911 GT2 cars will continue to run in the ALMS’ GT2 series.
Though Porsche’s departure from LMP2 would suggest Acura would be playing by itself, ALMS claims Mazda, partnered with Dyson Racing, will field two LMP2 cars in the 2009 series. Acura’s efforts in LMP2 may be smaller than in previous seasons, as it will also field two cars in LMP1.
