Mazda officially took the wraps off of the all-new 2014 6 sedan at the Paris Motor Show earlier today, and seeing it in the flesh only assures us that it will be one of the best-looking midsize sedans when it goes on sale.
It’s no surprise that the new 6 is a looker – it is based very closely on the Takeri concept from the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show. Dictated by the brand’s new kodo design language, the Mazda midsizer has flared front haunches, a sweeping profile, and a five-pointed grille outlined by brightwork flowing from the headlights.
When the 2014 Mazda 6 sedan goes on sale later this year (we won’t get the wagon), it will be powered by the same 2.0-liter I-4 found in the Mazda 3 and CX-5, tuned to 148 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque and mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. An optional 2.5-liter four will also be available, rated at 189 hp and 189 lb-ft. Mazda promises that the smaller engine will manage to eke out roughly 39 to 40 mpg on the highway, while the 2.5-liter will come in around 37 mpg. All 2014 6 models will come equipped with the i-ELOOP system that incorporates both auto start/stop and brake regeneration to help save fuel.
Expect that the Mazda 6 will be one of the more engaging midsize sedans to drive – Mazda has worked to maintain the sporty driving feel that the brand is known for, and the new car is lighter than its predecessor. New for Mazda, however, will be a raft of safety features including adaptive headlights, city braking, and a lane-departure warning system.
