Pagani Zonda R Claims Unofficial ‘Ring Record with 6min 47sec Lap

Forget about the Porsche GT2, Nissan GT-R, or even, yes, theCorvette ZR1.Unofficially nabbing the title of the fastest car on the Nurburgring Nordschleife earlier this morning was a brand-new Pagani Zonda R with a time of 6 min., 47 sec. That bests the previous records holder, the Radical SR8 LM, by around a second.

Ferrari started the bout two months ago with a ‘Ringrun of only 6 min., 58 sec. with its 599XX super car. Horacio Pagani wouldn’t have Maranello best him, so he put accomplished racing driver, Marc Basseng, behind the wheel of his latest and greatest AMG-powered machine.
Basseng is what can be described as a Nurburgring expert. In 2007, he piloted a Zonda F Clubsport around the circuit in only 7 min., 27 sec. and races there frequently.

Remember, though, that these Italian racing machines (plus the Radical from the U.K.) are not even close being considered street legal. For the fastest car around the Nordschleife that can be driven to the track, raced, and then driven home, you’ll have to pick up Viper SRT-10 ACR (7 min., 22 sec.).

In case you’re wondering, the Pagani Zonda R is an ultra-limited $2 million dollar hand-built machine made entirely of carbon titanium and carbon fiber. Its rear wheels are powered by a 750-horsepower 6.0-liter V-12 from AMG mated to sequential six-speed XTRAC gearbox.

It seems only natural for Porsche and its new GT2 RS to take a shot at the record. Whether or not it will has not been announced or rumored. But regardless, things are bound to get a little more interesting in Germany…

Correction: the Radical SR8 [bold]IS[/bold] street legal, and the viper isn’t even the fastest. The Gumpert Apollo is faster, as is the 911 GT2 RS, and (although I’m not sure on this one, just what I’ve heard) so is the Donkervoort.
