Every year on April 1, automotive journalists and carmakers go nuts with fake stories designed to trick the public, and this year was no different. Here are a few of our favorite April Fools’ Day pranks played by manufacturers and the media.
Honda got lots of attention at last week’s New York auto show with the HondaVac vacuum accessory in the updated 2014 Odyssey. The company capitalized on that feature today with the announcement of the new HondaHair accessory. According to the accompanying video, HondaHair is an attachment to the HondaVac, helping Odyssey buyers save time by cutting their hair in their minivans, rather than at the barber’s.
Lexus got in on the April Fools’ action by showing off an LFA courtesy shuttle. The automaker tweeted that transit time in the supercar is cut in half while customer satisfaction has doubled. We’re betting the high-revving 552-hp 4.8-liter V-10 has something to do with that.
SRT head and Chrysler design VP Ralph Gilles contributed too, tweeting, “SRT’s CUDA muscle car is approved. To get a 1.4-liter turbo 850-hp engine; weighs 2200lbs, front wheel drive, 0-60 in 1.8 seconds and gets 55mpg!”
A couple automotive outlets ran April Fools’ Day stories, attempting to deceive readers. Truck Trend ran a story saying that the 2015 Ford F-150 would ditch body-on-frame construction for an aluminum unibody chassis. If that wasn’t enough, TT also wrote that the next-gen Ford Raptor would ditch its big V-8 in favor of a high-power twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 motor.
We ran a story of our own, writing that Chrysler/Fiat head Sergio Marchionne had set a new, stricter dress code for all Chrysler and Fiat employees worldwide.
