We’ve heard rumblings for quite some time that General Motors’ Opel division was mulling the idea of a small — possibly electric-powered — commuter car. Nothing has been confirmed for production, but the company is showing a small, two-seat EV runabout at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
Details — including a finalized name — are scarce at this stage, but Opel promises the vehicle’s design is both striking and (theoretically) affordable. The car will seat two occupants in a tandem configuration; the body — reportedly built from lightweight materials — features a front fascia vaguely reminiscent of the Ampera and a tapered, sportbike-like tail.
Specifications on the powertrain have yet to be released, but Opel claims the car can reach speeds up to 75 mph. A single charge will provide a range of 60 miles, but battery details and charge times have yet to be discussed.
Expect more details to emerge on September 13, when Opel reveals the concept at its Frankfurt show stand. Whether or not the car will enter production remains to be seen, but the company does hint it has “production potential,” and GM has recently inked deals to develop all-new, electrified vehicles. Is this a sign of things to come?
