If you’ve got $23,000 lying around and enjoy turbochargers, you might want to listen up: the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo will cost $22,725 — including $775 in destination fees — when it goes on sale later this year.
It’s been a little bit of a guessing game this week, since Hyundai CEO John Krafcik told twitter that the Veloster Turbo would command a $1600 premium over a comparably equipped, naturally aspirated Veloster. By that stretch of math, the car was predicted to hit a price point of between $19,675 (add $1600 to the Veloster’s base price) and $21,675 (add $1600 to the price of the Veloster with the style package), but Hyundai confirmed today that you’ll need to cough up $22,725 for the pleasure of owning one of the new hot hatches.
The price discrepancy comes from some changes in standard equipment: the Hyundai Veloster Turbo comes standard with many features that are normally part of the Veloster’s options packages. For instance, the Turbo gets heated leather front seats and larger alloy wheels cribbed from the style package, along with keyless start ignition from the technology package, but skips the panoramic sunroof and navigation system typically bundled in those option groups. As a result, Hyundai says that the Veloster Turbo gains about $900 worth of content. Add in Krafcik’s magic number of $1600 — the amount of money Hyundai says goes to powertrain upgrades — and Hyundai’s $775 destination charge, and you arrive at $22,725.
At that price, the Veloster Turbo beats most of its rivals: it’ll cost $25 more than the Fiat 500 Abarth, but $420 less than the most basic Honda Civic Si. The Veloster Turbo also undercuts the Mini Cooper S by $1075, the Volkswagen Beetle Turbo by $1440, and the Volkswagen GTI by $2040.
If you’re in the mood for the Veloster Turbo’s power and the Veloster’s optional extras, there’s the optional Ultimate options package, which includes GPS navigation, the panoramic sunroof, and backup camera/sensors. That’ll run you an extra $2500. A six-speed automatic transmission (a conventional box, not the dual-clutch unit from the base Veloster) is available on all trim levels for a cool $1000. Also $1000: the Veloster Turbo’s segment-first matte gray paint.
The 2013 Veloster Turbo should come flying into a Hyundai showroom near you this summer, so time will tell if potential customers think the price is right. In the meantime, let us know what you think in the comments below.
