Well, it’s not like we didn’t see this one coming. General Motors and PSA Peugeot Citroën have officially tied the knot on their new alliance, and now claim they’ll co-develop four new vehicles/ vehicle platforms.
The Franco-American alliance was initially announced last February, and it was then suggested the two would work together on future products. However, now that the deal is signed, sealed, and delivered – and the European market is in increasingly dire straits – GM and PSA are now detailing just what will come out of the so-called Global Strategic Alliance.
So what’s in store? Most importantly are the four all-new platforms that GM and PSA will co-develop through the GSA. Unsurprisingly, these platforms will be primarily for the Opel/Vauxhall, Peugeot, and Citroën brands; however, thanks to the close link between Buick and Opel these days, there’s a remote chance we could see one wind up in the States. Most likely, we’ll see whatever car is the result of the new platform for mid-size cars that we expect will spawn the next-generation Opel Astra, Peugeot 308, and Citroën C4.
Also is the works is a platform for new small cars for Opel (Corsa) and Citroën (C3), as well as a new compact crossover for Peugeot that we assume will replace the 4008 co-developed with Mitsubishi. The final two models will be a new compact van for Opel (to replace the Combo, which was previously a cousin of the Fiat Doblo), and a new low-emissions compact global platform.
The Global Strategic Alliance will also establish a new joint purchasing operation, to help lower costs for all the involved brands. That operation has yet to be established, as it is pending antitrust regulatory approval. No matter what, GM expects that the new alliance could help the two automakers save roughly $2 billion in just five years.
